On the technological side of the product, our main goal was to get it to actually work. Aviad 3D-printed the “wand” model for us, and we were immediately excited - and so were the kids we later interviewed.
The real challenge began when we tried to integrate all the components together: fitting everything inside, keeping it stable, and making sure the buttons were both clickable and functional. In practice, every solution created a new problem - at first, components would shift and disconnect, and later, hot glue fixed that but made the buttons unclickable. It quickly turned into an iterative trial-and-error process.
At the same time, we decided not to wait and moved forward with user testing using a non-functional prototype - a product that looks complete and cute, but without light or real interactions. We tested initial associations, comfort (grip, weight, size), button colors, usability, and overall design feel.
Even without functionality, we gained valuable insights: the kids quickly understood how to use the product and showed curiosity and excitement. At the same time, we identified the need to improve the button color mapping, add a grip element (like a rubber band) to prevent slipping, and adjust the shape to better fit a child’s hand.
This week, we’ll focus on implementing these improvements and continue with another round of user testing - this time including LEDs and vibration to evaluate the full experience.
We’re starting to see how technology, design, and user experience come together into one cohesive product.
It will be interesting to see how these changes impact the user experience in the next round of testing.
